HYROX FAQ: the questions the rulebook actually answers

Can you wear headphones? Walk the runs? Take a gel from a friend? Twenty common questions, answered from the official 26/27 rulebook rather than from what people assume.

Most HYROX questions get answered with what people assume rather than what the rulebook says. These are the ones where the official 26/27 singles rulebook is explicit, and where the real answer is often not the obvious one.

Forbidden at all times, per the rulebook's own list:

| Banned | Banned | |---|---| | Headphones | Ear plugs | | Cell phones* | GoPros / body cameras | | VR headsets | Smart or AI glasses** | | Helmets | Breathing apparatus |

* Medical devices needing phone proximity require prior Race Director approval. ** Any eyewear with cameras, audio recording, live streaming, data transmission or AR functionality.

Kit and equipment

Can you wear headphones? No. Headphones are explicitly forbidden at all times. So are cell phones, VR headsets, GoPros and any other body camera, ear plugs, and smart or AI glasses with cameras, audio recording, live streaming, data transmission or augmented reality functionality.

The only exception is a medical device requiring proximity to your phone, which needs prior approval from the Race Director, arranged through local customer support before race day rather than negotiated on the morning.

Do you need special shoes? No. There is no footwear rule beyond general clothing requirements. Shoe choice is a performance decision, and the trainers guide covers what the race actually asks of one.

Can you wear a watch? Watches are not on the forbidden list. Smart glasses with recording or AR functionality are.

Running

Can you walk? Yes. Nothing requires you to run, and walking parts of the later kilometres is common for first-time finishers. It costs time, not legality.

How far is each run? 1km, eight times, for 8km total. Identical in every division; only the station loads change.

What if you miss a lap? A time penalty of 3 to 7 minutes per lap, set by venue, added to your final result. It is the most expensive avoidable mistake in the race. Count every lap.

Can you do HYROX with no running background? Yes, but it is the thing that most predicts your finish time, so allow longer. The training timeline breaks it down by starting point.

During the race

Is there a time limit? The singles rulebook sets no overall cut-off for regular events. Venues have operational schedules, so check your event, but the format itself does not impose one.

What happens if you cannot finish a station? You receive no results data and are excluded from rankings and awards, but you may continue the race without a final time. That is a DNF, and it is materially different from a disqualification: a DQ means you may not continue competing at all.

Can you take a gel from a friend? No. Water is made available at least once during, before or after each pass through the Roxzone, and a sports drink may also be available. Anything else you want, you carry from the start. Accepting food or drink from anyone other than the aid stations is "outside assistance" and can attract a time penalty.

Can you do the stations in a different order? No. The rulebook has a specific penalty section for completing stations in the incorrect order.

What is the Roxzone? The transition area between each run and each station. Time in it counts towards your finish. Entering through the OUT arch or leaving through the IN arch costs 2 minutes each time.

Entry and divisions

Do you need to qualify? No. Open and Pro at regular events are open entry, no qualification and no licence.

Do you need a licence? Only if you want results to count towards Elite 15 qualification, and it must be held before you race. See the Elite 15 explainer.

What is the minimum age? 16, which is the bottom of the Under 24 band.

Can you change division after entering? That is an event administration question rather than a rulebook one. Contact the organiser; do not assume you can switch on the day, and note that starting in a wave other than your assigned one is a disqualification.

Do weights get lighter as you get older? No. There is no age-based weight scaling anywhere in the rulebook. See age groups.

Things the rulebook does not answer

Being straight about the boundary matters as much as the answers.

Calories burned. Not a rulebook matter, and any specific figure you see quoted is an estimate dressed as a fact. It varies enormously by bodyweight, pace and finish time.

How many people are in a wave. Set per event by field size and hall.

Deferrals and transfers. Event administration, governed by the organiser's terms rather than the sporting rulebook.

Whether you get a medal. Event-specific.

Where this page cannot answer something, the honest answer is to ask the organiser rather than to guess convincingly.

Honest limitations

This is the singles rulebook. Doubles and relay have their own, with different rules on splitting, starts and qualification, and I have not read those in full.

Rules are revised between seasons. This reflects 26/27. Check the rulebook for the season you are racing, because at least one figure changes most years, and last season's answer confidently repeated is how most misinformation about this sport spreads.

Next step

For the full penalty structure, see HYROX rules: standards, penalties and no-reps.

For everything else a first-timer needs, start with the HYROX guide.

The fitness assessment quiz gives you an honest read on where you sit before you enter anything.

Source: all answers above are from the official HYROX singles rulebook, season 26/27 ↗, except those flagged as not covered by it.

Frequently asked

Can you wear headphones in HYROX?+

No. Headphones are on the rulebook's forbidden items list, along with phones, ear plugs, body cameras and smart glasses. They are forbidden at all times, not just during the race.

Can you walk during HYROX?+

Yes. There is no rule requiring you to run, and plenty of first-time finishers walk portions of the later kilometres. It costs time, not legality.

What happens if you cannot finish a station?+

You receive no results data and are excluded from rankings and awards, but you may continue the race without a final time. It is a DNF, not a disqualification, and you are not removed from the floor.

Can someone hand you a drink or gel during a HYROX?+

No. Accepting any beverage or nutritional product from anyone other than the aid stations counts as outside assistance and can attract a time penalty. Anything you want to take, you carry from the start.
