The fitness-race category has exploded since 2018. Hyrox, Spartan, and DEKA dominate three different lanes of it. Same word "race" on the entry, very different experiences on the day. This guide breaks down what each is, who it suits, and how the training differs so you don't sign up for the wrong one.
The 60-second comparison
| | Hyrox | Spartan Sprint | DEKA FIT | |---|---|---|---| | Total distance | 8 km running + 8 stations | 5 km running + 20 obstacles | 5 km running + 10 zones | | Venue | Indoor arena | Outdoor, often hilly | Indoor or outdoor | | Format | Fixed, repeatable | Variable course | Fixed, repeatable | | Average finish | 80-100 min | 35-60 min | 30-45 min | | Stations / obstacles | Sled, ski erg, wall ball, etc. | Rope, walls, monkey bars, carries | Ski erg, rower, sled, box jumps | | Indoor / outdoor | Indoor | Outdoor | Both | | Best for | Repeatable PB chasing | Adventure + grip | Short, sharp gym-floor test |
What Hyrox actually is
Hyrox is a fixed-format indoor race: 1 km running, 1 functional station, repeat eight times. The stations are the same at every event globally: ski erg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jump, rowing, farmer's carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls. Weights vary by category (open, doubles, pro, age groups).
The format being fixed is the entire point. Your time at London is comparable to your time at Manchester is comparable to your time at the World Championships. You train for specific splits. You can improve year on year and prove it.
Who Hyrox rewards: athletes who like progression you can measure. Strong runners with a decent base of strength. People who prefer indoor, controlled environments. Anyone who wants a race they can train for in a normal commercial gym.
Who it doesn't: trail-loving outdoor athletes who'd rather avoid wall balls than wall climbs.
What Spartan Race actually is
Spartan is an obstacle race franchise with multiple distances: Sprint (5 km), Super (10 km), Beast (21 km), and Ultra (50 km). The Sprint is the most popular and closest to a Hyrox in time commitment.
Spartan courses change at every event. The obstacles include things like rope climbs, sandbag carries, atlas stones, monkey bars, traverse walls, fire jumps. Miss an obstacle, do 30 burpees as a penalty.
Spartan happens outdoors. Often on ski resorts in summer. Often in mud. The terrain alone is a workout.
Who Spartan rewards: athletes who can grip, swing, and climb. Strong outdoor runners. People who like adventure and aren't precious about getting dirty. Anyone with good grip endurance.
Who it doesn't: athletes who hate cold mud, wet ropes, and burpee penalties. Anyone training for a precise time-based PB.
What DEKA actually is
DEKA is the newer of the three. Created by the same parent company as Spartan. Three formats: STRONG (10 zones, no run), FIT (10 zones + 500m run between each), and MILE (10 zones + 100m run + 1-mile finisher).
Zones include the usual functional kit (ski erg, sled, rower, box jumps, wall balls, alternating dumbbell snatch) plus a few unique ones (RAM clean and run, tank push, dead ball wall over).
DEKA is shorter and more intense. Average FIT finish is around 35 minutes. The work is harder per second than Hyrox; the duration is roughly half.
Who DEKA rewards: sprint-bias athletes. CrossFit converts. Anyone who finds 90-minute aerobic work boring but loves a hard 40-minute test.
Who it doesn't: athletes building toward marathon-distance fitness. Anyone who prefers the longer mental game of Hyrox.
How the training differs
The good news: a base of Hyrox-specific training covers 80% of what you need for the other two. The differences are at the edges.
Hyrox training
Base aerobic running (45-90 min easy runs), threshold work (4-8 km at race pace), strength biased to posterior chain (deadlift, hip hinge, sled work), and weekly race-format simulations. The pacing is the hardest part. See our 12-week Hyrox training plan for the structure.
Spartan training
Hyrox base, plus dedicated grip work (dead hangs, towel pull-ups, farmer's carries at heavier loads), trail running on uneven terrain, and one weekly obstacle-skill session if you can find an OCR gym. The grip is the bottleneck for most Spartan first-timers.
DEKA training
Hyrox base, with more high-intensity intervals (4-8 min hard, 2 min easy) and less long-aerobic volume. DEKA is closer to a CrossFit-style metcon. If you've done CrossFit at a competitive level, you're already 70% prepared.
Which one should you do first
Honest answer: it depends on what kind of athlete you are right now.
- Strong, decent runner, no obstacle experience: Hyrox. Start at any UK event. Same format means you can train specifically and the first race teaches you the most.
- Outdoor-loving, good grip, runs hills for fun: Spartan Sprint. Pick a venue near home for the first one.
- Strong, fast, short-attention-span: DEKA STRONG (no run) or FIT. You'll finish in under 40 minutes and want to go again.
The honest secondary answer: if you do one and like it, the other two are accessible within a few weeks of focused prep. Most serious fitness racers do all three within a calendar year.
Cost, venues, calendar
Hyrox UK runs major events in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Newcastle through the year. Entry is typically £85-110 depending on category and how early you book.
Spartan UK runs Sprint and Super at venues like Windsor, Marston Lodge, and a few ski resort venues. Entry is typically £70-95.
DEKA has fewer UK events but they're growing. Check the official DEKA event page for the latest.
The honest summary
These three races are friends, not enemies. They train different sides of fitness and reward different builds. If you've never raced any of them, Hyrox is the easiest debut because the format is fixed, the venue is indoor, and you can train for it in a normal gym. If you finish one and want more, the other two open up quickly.
What none of them are: easy. All three are humbling. The athletes who finish best are the ones who picked one, trained for it specifically, and didn't try to do all three in the same eight weeks.
Pick one. Pick a date. Train for it. The rest follows.
[ FAQ ]
Frequently asked
Is Hyrox harder than a Spartan Race?
They're hard in different ways. Spartan tests carrying heavy things over uneven ground and obstacle technique. Hyrox tests sustained gym-based work between equal runs in a controlled indoor environment. Most Hyrox finishers say it's harder mentally because the running and the work alternate predictably for 90 minutes.
Is DEKA easier than Hyrox?
DEKA FIT is shorter (10 zones, 500 m runs between) so the total time is closer to 30-50 minutes. The intensity is higher. Hyrox is a longer aerobic test; DEKA is a sprint hybrid. Different sport for different athletes.
Can the same training prepare you for all three?
A solid Hyrox base will get you through DEKA STRONG without much extra prep. Spartan needs grip-specific work and trail running on top, which most Hyrox programmes don't include.
Which one has the best community for first-timers?
Hyrox is the easiest to debut at. Same format every event, indoor, fixed stations, no obstacle anxiety. Spartan Sprint is a close second and the obstacles are designed to be attemptable.
