A programme written for you
Your level, your equipment, your available days. The quiz takes three minutes and your first week appears before you decide anything.
[ Oxford · South East ]
There are 20 gyms and sports centres within reach of the centre of Oxford, PureGym among them, and this programme is written around whichever one you use. University Parks parkrun is your nearest measured 5 km, which is how you will know it is working. Online personal training from HYROX Elite 15 athlete Ben Sutherland, rebuilt every Sunday from what you logged.
Your level, your equipment, your available days. The quiz takes three minutes and your first week appears before you decide anything.
Log your sessions and the plan recalibrates each Sunday, around whichever of the 20 places near Oxford you actually got to. Strong week, it pushes harder. Missed sessions, it rebuilds with more recovery.
Ben Sutherland competes in the HYROX Elite 15 and coaches athletes from their first session to professional level. Your questions get answered in the app.

Where to run, near you
Free, measured, timed, every Saturday morning. The simplest way to see whether the programme is working is to run the same 5 km every few weeks and watch the number move.

Roughly 84 km from Oxford in a straight line, which for most people is an early train rather than a hotel. Whichever race you enter, the programme is built backwards from that date.

Oxford has plenty of choice, which means you can be picky about the thing that actually matters: whether you will still be going in March. Proximity beats facilities almost every time, and a rack you can get on at the hour you train beats both.
Chains with a site here: PureGym. If you already hold one of those memberships, you can start this week without paying anything new.

20 gyms and sports centres sit within a few miles of the centre of Oxford. That is enough to choose on what the floor actually holds rather than on which is nearest.
Closest to the centre you have PureGym, Buzz Gym and Jiu-Jitsu Republic, the nearest of them about 0 km out. Ring before you join and ask what the free-weight area looks like at the hour you would actually be there. A rack you have to queue twenty minutes for at six o'clock is the single most common reason a programme stops getting done.
Jiu-Jitsu Republic and Corpus Christi College Gym are listed as sports centres rather than gyms. Multi-use sites are usually where the floor space is, and often where the off-peak hours are quietest, which matters more to a training habit than the equipment list does.
PureGym has a site here, so an existing membership may already cover you. If you are joining from scratch, a rolling monthly contract is worth the few extra pounds while you work out which sessions you actually turn up for.
You are well served for measured running around Oxford. 5 parkrun courses sit within reach: University Parks parkrun, Harcourt Hill parkrun and Oxford parkrun are the closest three, University Parks parkrun being about 1.4 km out. Use one as your fixed benchmark and run it in the same conditions each time, or the number tells you nothing.
They spread from roughly 1 km out to 9 km, so pick one as the benchmark rather than running whichever is convenient — a different course is a different number.
The hard part of training in Oxford is not the first fortnight, it is week seven, when the novelty has gone and the weather has turned. What survives that is a programme that already knows which days you train and does not need you to decide anything on the day.
With this many places to train nearby, the useful discipline is picking one and staying put long enough to progress on it. Switching gyms resets your reference points — the same bar, the same rack, the same walk in — and those references are most of what tells you whether the last month worked.
The options here sit close together — from about 0 km out to 1.9 km — so switching is cheap if the first one does not suit. That is worth knowing before you sign a twelve-month contract rather than after.
PureGym operates here, which matters if you move or travel for work — the same membership tends to open the door elsewhere, and continuity beats equipment for anyone training year-round.
Plenty of people train one town over, whether that is a better gym, a flatter route, or simply the one on the way home from work.
