Hyrox training apps: cheapest, best, and the honest middle

TrainingPeaks, Marchon, HAC, Suth Performance, free PDFs, what you get at each price point, and what you need. The honest comparison.

Hyrox training apps comparison

The Hyrox training market in the UK looks like this:

  • Free, downloadable PDFs from PureGym, Gymshark, various gym blogs
  • Cost-effective online programming. Suth Performance (us, personalised with weekly recalibration; pricing tailored on a free consultation)
  • £30/mo. Marchon (Hyrox-specific, more programmes, in-app community)
  • £45/mo. Hybrid Athlete Club (premium, athlete-led community)
  • £150-400/mo. 1:1 coaching with named human coaches

Each tier sells you something genuinely different. Here's the honest comparison so you can pick the right one, including the cases where the cheaper option is actually better.

What each tier actually delivers

Free PDF

What you get: A 12-week plan as a static PDF. Daily sessions written out: run distance, station work, rest. Typically generic, same plan for every reader.

What you don't get: Personalisation, recalibration, adjustment for missed sessions, audio-prompted workouts, equipment-aware substitutions.

Best for: Your first Hyrox if you're disciplined and have a strong fitness base. The plan structure is fine; you just have to do the work without any feedback loop.

Watch for: Generic plans don't know your race date, equipment, injuries, or body weight. You'll have to interpret the plan against your reality.

Suth Performance

What you get: Personalised 12-week programme from a 3-minute quiz. All 4 programmes (First Race, Sub-90, Doubles, Pro) included. Sunday recalibration based on what you logged. Equipment-aware substitutions. Calibrated loads for your sex + body weight. First-week-free trial.

What you don't get: Human coach messaging you. Video form check on demand. Custom block written for your name.

Best for: First-race finishers, second-race PR-chasers, plateau-break athletes, doubles teams. Anyone for whom £30+/mo isn't worth the marginal programming improvement.

Honest framing: Software-first programming, not 1:1 coaching. We say this explicitly. The programming logic is identical to what a £150/mo coach would write, applied to your inputs, updated weekly. The difference is human accountability, which costs more elsewhere.

Marchon (~£30/mo Core, £40/mo Pro)

What you get: Hyrox-specific app with multiple programmes, in-app community, structured tracking, polished UX. 7-day trial with 3-month minimum after.

What you don't get: Personalisation as deep as Suth Performance's (Marchon picks from preset blocks). Single race-date calibration depth.

Best for: Athletes who want a more app-native experience, community feeds, leaderboards, and don't mind the 3-month commitment.

Watch for: The 3-month minimum is buried in the fine print. Cancellation is harder than the marketing suggests.

Hybrid Athlete Club (£45/mo)

What you get: Premium Hyrox-focused programmes from named elite athletes, in-app community, race calculator tools, more elite-track athlete vibe.

What you don't get: As mass-market as Marchon. As cheap as Suth Performance.

Best for: Athletes with Pro-division ambition who want to train alongside a community at that level.

Watch for: Higher price reflects positioning as much as substance. Programming quality is excellent; whether you need the price point depends on your trajectory.

1:1 coaching (£150-400/mo)

What you get: A named human coach who writes blocks specifically for you, messages you weekly, watches your video uploads, adjusts on demand. Real accountability.

What you don't get: Software automation. Plans regenerate when you change inputs. You'll wait for the coach.

Best for: Elite-track athletes targeting Worlds qualification. Athletes with complex injury histories. Athletes for whom human accountability is the conversion mechanism, not the programming.

Watch for: Quality varies enormously. A bad £200/mo coach is worse than a good £5/mo app.

The honest decision tree

You've never raced Hyrox. Suth Performance or a free PDF. The 12-week structure matters more than the platform, both will get you to a finish line. Suth Performance's edge is real-week-day calibration; the free PDF's edge is no monthly cost. If you have £20 of total budget for race-prep, spend it on Suth Performance; if you have zero, the PDF works.

You've raced once and want to break 100 minutes. Suth Performance. The 12-week recalibration is exactly what closes a 5-10 minute gap on second-race time. Free PDFs don't adapt.

You've raced multiple times and are stuck at 90-95 minutes. Suth Performance Sub-90 programme or a £30+/mo competitor. Both will work. The question is whether you need the community / app polish that the higher tier brings, for many athletes, the answer is no.

You're chasing sub-80 or Pro qualification. Suth Performance Pro plus 1:1 coaching. The core programme handles the structure; 1:1 time with a Pro-level coach handles your specific limiters and the qualifying tactics.

You're racing doubles. Suth Performance Doubles programme. There's almost no doubles-specific programming on the market, most apps treat doubles as "two athletes doing the solo plan together," which is wrong. Suth Performance's Doubles programme is built around handoff strategy and split-pacing decisions.

What price doesn't buy

A few honest notes about what more money doesn't get you:

  • Better aerobic base. Aerobic capacity comes from consistent volume. No app delivers more of that per pound spent than another.
  • Race-day pacing discipline. Your watch and your willpower do this. No coach can race for you.
  • Sleep, nutrition, recovery. Budget plan or £400/mo coaching, the same 8 hours of sleep matters either way.

What price does buy:

  • Programming density. Higher-tier apps have more workout templates, more variation.
  • Human accountability. Real coaches text you. Apps notify you.
  • Community. Some athletes train better surrounded by other people on the same journey.
  • Edge-case handling. Complex injuries, masters with multiple conditions, returning athletes after long breaks, human coaches earn their fee here.

How Suth Performance prices

Pricing is tailored on a free consultation, and the honest reason it can stay cost-effective is that the core programming is delivered by software with Ben's coaching layered on top where you need it. See the coaching options. Most members never need full 1:1.

That said: the moment you hit a limit that needs a human, we'll signpost it. There are coaches we'd recommend.

The cohort that gets it wrong

The most expensive mistake we see: athletes paying £45/mo for a premium app, then not doing the prescribed sessions. The £45/mo app doesn't make you run on Tuesday. Discipline does that. Without it, the programming tier is irrelevant.

Cheapest setup that works: a structured plan + a watch + a wall to push a sled into + the willingness to show up. That beats any £400/mo coaching package whose sessions you skip.

How to decide today

  1. Start with the Suth Performance quiz. It's free. The output tells you what's recommended.
  2. If a paid plan doesn't fit your wallet yet, try a free PDF for your first race.
  3. If you finish your first race and want more accountability, try £30+/mo with a 1-month trial.
  4. If you're chasing podium times, talk to a 1:1 coach.

The takeaway

The cheapest plan that you'll actually execute beats the most expensive plan you'll abandon. For most UK Hyrox racers, that's a £5/mo app + a watch + discipline.

[ FAQ ]

Frequently asked

Is a free Hyrox training plan good enough?+

For your first race, yes, if it's a structured 12-week plan from a reputable source. For breaking 90 or 75 minutes, the limitation isn't the plan; it's the lack of recalibration based on what you actually do. A £9/mo app that recalibrates beats a free static PDF every time after the first race.

Do I need £45/mo coaching to break sub-90?+

No. Suth Performance's structured programming breaks sub-90 for any athlete with the underlying fitness and discipline. Heavier coaching packages add a human messaging you, video form checks, and custom blocks; the marginal sub-90 gain is small. The premium pays for human accountability, not better programming.
