HYROX is a brand name for a specific fitness race: 8km of running split into eight 1km segments, each followed by one of eight standardised workout stations. It is not an acronym, the letters do not stand for anything, and it is not a style of training. It is the name of an event.
That is the whole answer. The rest of this page covers the ways the word gets used loosely, because that is usually why people search for it.
Not an acronym
The most common assumption is that HYROX expands into something, in the way that terms like WOD or AMRAP do. It does not. It is a coined name, chosen to sound like what it is, in the same category as Ironman, Tough Mudder or Spartan Race. Those are not acronyms either.
You will occasionally see backronyms invented online, usually involving "hybrid". Treat them as invention rather than fact. There is no official expansion.
What the word actually refers to
Strictly, HYROX refers to the race and the organisation that runs it. The race is identical everywhere: same eight stations, same order, same distances, same loads per division, whether you are racing in London or Chicago. That standardisation is the point of the brand, because it means times are broadly comparable across events in a way that obstacle races never managed.
The race format is fixed as follows: SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, row, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls, with a 1km run before each one.
The three ways people use the word loosely
"I'm doing HYROX" usually means "I have entered a HYROX race", but it can also mean "I am training in the general style of it". Context decides.
"A HYROX workout" normally means a gym session built from race movements: running intervals mixed with sled work, wall balls, and so on. This is not an official term. It is gym shorthand, and what one gym means by it can differ substantially from another.
"HYROX gym" or "HYROX class" means a gym that runs sessions aimed at the race, sometimes as an official affiliate and sometimes not. Being a HYROX-branded training club is a formal relationship with the organisation. A class called "HYROX prep" is not necessarily anything of the sort.
That last distinction is worth knowing if you are choosing where to train. Ask directly whether a gym is an official training club or simply running race-style sessions. Both can be good. They are not the same thing.
Hyrox, HYROX, or Hyrox?
The brand styles itself in capitals. In ordinary writing, "Hyrox" is common and perfectly clear. Nobody will misunderstand you either way.
If you searched for something slightly different
The name is easy to mistype, and several spellings send people to the wrong results entirely. If you arrived here having searched any of these, you were looking for HYROX:
- Hydrox is the most common by a distance. It is also a real and unrelated word, which is why the results look wrong. "Hydrox training", "hydrox gym", "hydrox sport", "hydrox events" and "hydrox uk" are all HYROX searches.
- Hirox and hirox sports are a phonetic guess, since the first syllable sounds like "high".
- Hyrdox, hryox, hyroc are straightforward transpositions.
There is no separate sport under any of those names. It is all the same event: 8km of running and eight standardised stations.
How it differs from things it gets confused with
Not CrossFit. CrossFit varies its workouts deliberately and includes barbell lifting and gymnastics skills such as muscle-ups. HYROX is one fixed race with no skill movements. If you can push a sled and throw a wall ball, you already know every movement in it.
Not an obstacle race. There is no mud, no climbing and nothing to crawl under. It is held indoors on a flat floor.
Not a triathlon. One discipline, running, interrupted by workout stations. No swimming or cycling.
Not a marathon. 8km of running total, though the stations make it considerably harder than an 8km run.

The practical part: using the word correctly when you sign up
If you are new and about to enter, these are the terms you will meet and what they actually mean.
- Division is your category: Women, Women Pro, Men, Men Pro. Open is the standard entry, Pro is heavier loads at five stations.
- Doubles is two athletes sharing the stations while both run the full 8km. Relay is four athletes splitting the whole race.
- Roxzone is the transition area between a run and a station. Time in it counts towards your finish.
- Age group is set by your age on race day, in five-year bands from Under 24 upwards.
- Station means one of the eight fixed workouts. Not "exercise", not "obstacle".
Getting these right will save you confusion on entry pages and on race day.
Honest limitations
Definitions only take you so far. Knowing what the word means tells you nothing about whether you are ready to race, and the gap between understanding HYROX and completing one is roughly twelve weeks of consistent training for most people.
The looser usages are also genuinely ambiguous. If someone tells you they run a HYROX class, ask what is actually in it before you assume.
Next step
Now that the word makes sense, the useful question is where your fitness sits. The fitness assessment quiz gives you an honest starting point.

Frequently asked
What does HYROX mean?
HYROX is a brand name, not an acronym. It refers to a specific standardised fitness race: 8km of running broken into eight 1km segments, each followed by one of eight fixed workout stations, held to the same specification worldwide.
What does HYROX stand for?
Nothing. It is not an initialism and the letters do not expand into words. It is a coined brand name for the race series, in the same way that Ironman is a brand name rather than an acronym.
Is HYROX a workout or an event?
Both, loosely. Strictly it is a race. In everyday gym use people also say HYROX to mean training aimed at that race, and gyms often run HYROX-style classes, but the word itself refers to the event.
