The race does not care what you eat. The 8km, the eight stations and the rulebook loads are identical either way, and so are your macro targets.
What changes is the planning. Protein takes structure rather than luck, a handful of nutrients are worth checking, and the carbohydrate side, which is the part that actually fuels a HYROX, gets easier rather than harder.
Why trust this
The targets on this page are the same ones used across the rest of the site, applied to a different food set: 1.6 to 2.0 g of protein per kg per day, carbohydrate scaled to training load, per the macro framework.
There are no performance comparisons here between plant-based and omnivorous athletes, because the honest summary of that research is "it depends on whether the diet is well constructed", which is not a number.

Protein without living on shakes
The failure mode is not the total. It is the distribution: a day that is mostly carbohydrate until an evening meal that tries to carry all the protein at once.
Anchor four or five points in the day, each carrying something meaningful:
- Soya is the most complete plant protein in common use: tofu, tempeh, edamame, soya milk.
- Legumes and pulses across the day rather than in one meal.
- Seitan is very high in protein if gluten is not an issue.
- Grains and pulses together across a day cover each other's gaps. This does not need to happen inside a single meal.
- A shake is a convenience, not a foundation. Soya or pea protein is fine if you want one.
If you take one thing from this section: add a protein anchor to breakfast. It is the meal plant-based athletes most often leave as pure carbohydrate, and fixing it usually closes most of the daily gap on its own.
The fibre trade-off
High fibre is good for you and mostly good for training. It is not good in the 48 hours before a race.
A plant-based athlete carb loading needs to drop fibre harder than most, because the starting point is higher. White rice over brown, ripe bananas over raw vegetables, and juice in place of some whole fruit. It feels wrong for two days. Do it anyway.

The practical part
- Set the protein target and spread it. Body weight in kg times 1.8, divided across four or five points in the day.
- Fix breakfast first. It is usually where the gap is.
- Get bloods done rather than guessing. B12, iron and vitamin D. This is a GP conversation, and it is worth having once rather than supplementing blindly.
- Take B12. On a fully plant-based diet this is a requirement, not an optimisation.
- Consider creatine. It is among the better-evidenced supplements in sport and plant-based athletes often start from lower stores.
- Rehearse race week. Low-fibre eating feels unfamiliar. Practise it before your longest training session, not for the first time on the Friday.
Honest limitations
This is general guidance, not a personalised plan, and it assumes a healthy adult with no diagnosed deficiency or condition. Supplement decisions and blood tests belong with a GP or a registered dietitian, and this page is not a substitute for either.
It also does not argue that plant-based is better or worse for HYROX. A well-constructed diet in either direction works, and a badly constructed one in either direction does not.
