HYROX runs four tiers of event: regular races anyone can enter, Majors with deeper fields, the invitation-only Elite Racing Series, and the World Championships at the end of each season.
The useful thing to understand is that they are not separate ladders. Qualification for Worlds runs straight through ordinary races, so the event you enter on a Saturday is also the qualifying route.
Why trust this
Qualification rules below are read from the official HYROX singles rulebook for the 26/27 season. Ben Sutherland races the Elite tier in Pro Doubles with his brother Harry, including sixth at the World Championships in Chicago in 2025 and eighth at the Warsaw Major in 2026.
The four tiers
| Tier | Entry | Who it is for | |---|---|---| | Regular event | Open to anyone | The bulk of the calendar, and the qualifying route | | Major | Open to anyone | Larger fields, deeper competition, more points at stake | | Elite Racing Series | Invitation, off ranking | The professional tier, own start wave | | World Championships | Qualification only | End of season, qualified athletes only |
There are 100 confirmed races in the 2026/27 season, and the full calendar lists them. The season closes at the World Championships in Hong Kong in June 2027.
Regular events
The default. No qualification, no licence, no requirement beyond entering and being medically fit to compete. Open and Pro divisions both run, plus doubles and relay.
This is where almost everyone races, and it is worth saying plainly that racing exclusively at regular events is not a lesser version of the sport. Age group rankings, podiums and flags all apply here.
Majors
Larger, higher-profile races that draw deeper fields.
Practically, the difference for a recreational racer is atmosphere and scale. For anyone chasing Elite qualification it is more than that, because points are weighted by race tier and the competitive depth of the field. A mid-pack finish in a deep Major can out-score a win in a shallow local race.
The Elite Racing Series
Invitation-only, off a rolling ranking, and it runs as a separate start wave from the rest of the field.
To accrue the points that produce those rankings you need a HYROX Athlete Licence, applied for before you race. Results achieved while unlicensed never count and the licence cannot be applied retrospectively. The Elite 15 explainer covers the mechanics in full.
The World Championships
The highlight of the season, and qualification-only, but the route is more accessible than people assume.
Any racer starting at a regular HYROX event can qualify. Slots are limited per division at each event, and each race class at every qualifying event offers one World Championship spot. If you place within your age group and earn a slot:
- You are notified by email shortly after the event.
- You receive an invitation to register within 48 hours.
- Miss that window and the slot rolls down to the next best placed finisher in the same division.
- You compete at Worlds in the age group you qualified in, regardless of your birthday between qualifying and racing.
That last detail matters if you are near a band boundary, and it works in your favour: qualifying at 39 means racing Worlds in that band even if you turn 40 first.
One rule for older athletes. Racers aged 60 and above qualify via the Open division only, and at Worlds all 60+ age groups compete using Open weights, repetitions and distances. So if you are 60 or over and Worlds is the goal, racing Pro during the season does not build a qualifying route.
The practical part: choosing which to enter
- First race? A regular event, ideally close to home. Travel adds cost, fatigue and risk at the point you have the most variables already.
- Want the atmosphere? A Major. Bigger field, more noise, more to do around the venue.
- Chasing a Worlds slot? Enter regular events and race your age group hard. Check the slot allocation for your division at that event, because it is limited and it is one per race class.
- Chasing Elite? Get the Athlete Licence first, before your next race, then think about race selection and field depth. In that order.
- Watch your inbox after a good race. A Worlds slot has a 48-hour registration window and then it is gone.
Honest limitations
Slot allocations per division vary by event and are not published on this page. Check the event itself.
The full rolldown procedure has its own section in the rulebook (5.3) with more detail than is summarised here, and it is worth reading properly if you think you are close.
Doubles carries its own qualification rules, which differ from singles. And the 26/27 Elite system is described in the rulebook as involving transitional arrangements for an inaugural season, so specifics may be revised.

Frequently asked
What is the difference between a HYROX major and a regular event?
Regular events are the bulk of the calendar and anyone can enter one. Majors are larger, higher-profile races that draw deeper fields, which matters for Elite qualification points because points are weighted by the strength of the field.
Can anyone enter a HYROX World Championship?
No. Worlds is qualification-only, but the qualification route runs through ordinary races. Each race class at every qualifying event offers one World Championship spot, awarded on age group placing.
How do you qualify for the HYROX World Championships?
Place well in your age group at a qualifying event. If you earn a slot you are notified by email and have 48 hours to register, after which it rolls down to the next best finisher. You compete at Worlds in the age group you qualified in, regardless of your birthday.
Do I need to qualify to race HYROX?
Not for regular events. The Open and Pro divisions at ordinary races are open entry with no qualification and no licence required.
