If you're picking your first or second UK Hyrox race, the decision usually comes down to London or Manchester. They're the two biggest UK fixtures, both in major-city arena venues, both running identical race standards. The differences are everywhere else.

This piece breaks down the honest comparison so you can pick the right race for your situation.

At a glance

| Axis | Hyrox London (ExCeL) | Hyrox Manchester (Manchester Central) | |---|---|---| | Athletes | The larger UK field | Smaller than London | | Atmosphere | Major-event corporate-scale | Local-club tighter community feel | | Venue | ExCeL, purpose-built convention centre on the Docklands | Manchester Central, converted Victorian rail terminus in the CBD | | Transport | DLR Custom House (2 min) or Elizabeth Line | Train Piccadilly (10 min) or tram (3 min) | | Hotels | £150-250/night for walking-distance | £80-130/night for walking-distance | | Race standards | Identical | Identical | | Divisions running | All divisions (Open, Pro, Doubles, Relay, Masters) | All major divisions; smaller Masters bracket | | Bag drop / warm-up area | Bigger, more queues | More compact, faster turnaround | | Saturday vs Sunday | Both days run all divisions | Slightly more concentrated on Saturday | | Best for | Bucket-list "biggest UK race" experience | First-time racers, Northern athletes, value travel |

Venue, the actual race experience

ExCeL London is a 100,000 m² purpose-built convention centre on the Royal Victoria Dock. The Hyrox floor takes one of the main exhibition halls, the lanes are perfectly flat, the lighting is industrial-bright, the ceilings are 12+ metres high. It feels like a major sporting event. The downside: the venue is enormous, so you can walk 10 minutes between bag drop and warm-up area.

Manchester Central is a converted Victorian rail terminus in central Manchester. Smaller hall, lower ceilings, more intimate atmosphere. The walk between bag drop, warm-up, and start is 2-3 minutes maximum. Feels like a serious-but-friendly local race rather than a corporate spectacle.

For most first-time racers, Manchester's compactness reduces race-day stress noticeably. ExCeL's scale is impressive but adds logistical friction.

Atmosphere

Both events sell out wave times. Both have spectator areas with the same energy.

ExCeL brings the major-event atmosphere. DJ booth, big screens, international athlete presence, more sponsor activations. The Pro division at ExCeL tends to draw the deepest UK field because it's the biggest qualifier.

Manchester has a tighter-knit feel. Local Hyrox clubs from across the North turn up in matching kit. The spectator energy is louder per square metre, you can hear individual cheers from the warm-up area.

For your first race, Manchester's atmosphere is often more comfortable. For your fifth race when you want the big-stage feel, ExCeL is the bucket list.

Transport + travel

ExCeL London, the DLR drops you at Custom House or Prince Regent, both 2-3 minutes from the entrance. The Elizabeth Line stops at Custom House directly. Driving is possible but parking books up 4-6 weeks ahead. From outside London, easiest by train into Liverpool Street → Elizabeth Line direct.

Manchester Central. Manchester Piccadilly is a 10-minute walk; Oxford Road station is 5. The Metrolink stops at St Peter's Square (3-minute walk). Driving and parking at a city-centre NCP is genuinely easier than London. From the surrounding regions (Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham), the M62/M6 makes Manchester a 1-2 hour drive. Hyrox-day-trip-able for much of the North.

For Northern athletes, Manchester is a no-contest. For London athletes, ExCeL. For everywhere else, the travel cost matters more than people admit, race-day fatigue is real after a 3-hour drive that morning.

Accommodation

London hotels walking distance from ExCeL: Aloft London ExCeL, Crowne Plaza Docklands, Sunborn Yacht Hotel. £150-250 per night for race weekend (more for the Sunborn). Hotels in Canary Wharf are 10 minutes by DLR and often £20-50 cheaper.

Manchester hotels walking distance from Manchester Central: Premier Inn Deansgate, Hilton Deansgate, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn Express MediaCity. £80-130 per night for race weekend. Manchester city-centre also has more Airbnb supply.

For a two-night race weekend, accommodation cost difference is typically £100-150. Add London zone 1 dinners and the gap widens.

Race standards + format

Identical. Both events run the same Hyrox standards:

  • Men's Open: 152 kg sled push (incl. sled), 6 kg wall ball to a 3.00 m target, 100 reps.
  • Women's Open: 102 kg sled push (incl. sled), 4 kg wall ball to a 2.70 m target, 100 reps.
  • 8 stations, 8 × 1 km runs, fixed order.

Full loads for every division are in the station weights reference.

The race you do at Manchester is the exact same race you do at London. There's no harder venue. There's no faster venue. The clock counts identically.

The only differentiator is wave density. ExCeL has more parallel lanes, so the in-race spacing is similar to Manchester despite the bigger field.

Which one to pick

Pick London if:

  • You're based in or near London (under 2 hours travel).
  • You want the bucket-list experience.
  • You want to race the deepest Pro qualifier field.
  • You're racing as a spectator-friendly experience (family + friends with you for the weekend. ExCeL has more around-venue stuff to do).

Pick Manchester if:

  • You're based in the Midlands or North (most athletes north of Birmingham, frankly).
  • It's your first race and you want a less overwhelming venue.
  • You want cheaper accommodation.
  • You like the tighter community feel.
  • You want a less queue-heavy warm-up area experience.

Pick neither, go Birmingham or Glasgow if:

  • You're based in the Midlands (NEC is a 5-min walk from Birmingham International rail station).
  • You're based in Scotland (Glasgow, at the Scottish Event Campus, is the obvious choice).

Common questions

Should my first Hyrox be at one of the smaller venues?

Manchester is the better first-race choice for most people. The reduced friction (smaller venue, easier travel, cheaper hotels, faster turnaround) materially lowers first-race stress. London is the right second race if you're aiming for the spectacle.

Are race times faster at one venue?

We have no venue-by-venue timing data to point at, and anyone who quotes you a figure for this almost certainly does not either. What can be said is that lane width and congestion affect how much time you lose passing people, and that these are small effects next to your own fitness and pacing.

Which venue has better post-race food?

Manchester is in the city centre, within 5 minutes' walk you have any UK food chain plus great independents. ExCeL has chain food on-site (Wagamama, Wahaca, Five Guys) but limited variety. Take a packed snack regardless, you'll want food immediately after the race, not after a 20-min walk.

How Suth Performance programmes for either

Both events auto-show in the Suth Performance quiz race-date picker. Your 12-week build calibrates identically, the race is the same. The only difference is the city page or city page you'd reference for local context.

Where to go from here

Race standards are identical. The decision is logistics + atmosphere + travel cost.

For most first-timers and for most non-London-based athletes, Manchester is the more practical choice. For the bucket-list experience and London locals, ExCeL.

The race counts the same either way.

[ FAQ ]

Frequently asked

Is Hyrox London harder than Manchester?+

Race standards are identical, and the station weights and course layout are the same. London runs the larger field, which in practice means longer waves and a little more queueing at stations.

Which is cheaper to attend. Hyrox London or Manchester?+

Manchester. Hotels typically £80-130 per night vs £150-250 in London. Entry fees are identical. Travel obviously depends on where you live.

How do HYROX waves and start times work?

Waves go off at scheduled intervals, often every ten minutes, and you are assigned one. Starting in the wrong wave is a disqualification, not a telling-off.
